James Gregg is a staff photographer at the recently renamed U-T San Diego (The San Diego Union-Tribune) and works in stills as well as video and multimedia.  James was the 2009 Photographer of the Year (Smaller Markets) in the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism competition and has earned three regional Emmy awards for multimedia and video.

A Spanish and Latin American studies major in college, he started in photography at a Spanish language weekly newspaper in northern Colorado.  He went on to the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson where he was named Arizona photographer of the year twice and worked as adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.

He has been faculty at NPPA’s Convergence, the Southern Short Course in News Photography, and Western Kentucky University’s Mountain Workshops and has served as judge for NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, the Southern Short Course,  and Society of News Design’s Best of News Design.

James believes in the power of imagery to inspire and challenge and looks for ways to evolve with a changing landscape while keeping strong roots to the traditions and values of photojournalism.  Every once in a while, he escapes to enjoy the SoCal sunshine and enjoy time with good friends and family.

He is bilingual, majoring in Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Kansas, and has lived in Ecuador and Costa Rica.
