IPPA member Robert Cohen is Pulitzer finalist

This week, IPPA member Robert Cohen was named a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize . The Illinois Press Photographers Association would like to send a big congratulations to Robert for his hard work chronicling families living in motels during the recession.
Cohen, a photographer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was a speaker at the 2007 IPPA conference at Northwestern University.

Many more of his images from the story and an audio slide show about the struggling families produced by Robert can be found here.

IPPA convention speaker: Josh Meltzer, Western Kentucky University

Josh Meltzer
Western Kentucky University
Bowling Green, Kentucky
Josh Meltzer joined the faculty at Western Kentucky University in August 2009 to work and teach as a Photojournalist-in-Residence where he teaches photojournalism and multimedia storytelling. A native of Athens, Georgia, Josh is a 1995 graduate of Carleton College in Minnesota, and remained in Minnesota where he began his career at the Duluth News-Tribune in Duluth.
In 2008, after 9 years as a staff photographer and multimedia journalist at The Roanoke Times in Roanoke, Virginia, Josh Meltzer accepted a Fulbright Scholarship to work and teach in Mexico where worked to create a multimedia project about the migration of indigenous families within Mexico. In addition to his own work, he taught photography to a group of 11-16-year-olds through a program called Listen to My Pictures, which culminated with a show at a large regional museum in Guadalajara in June 2009.
While at The Roanoke Times, Josh created his first audio slideshow in 1999, and over the next decade created over a hundred audio slideshows, both on daily deadline, and for long-term projects. A few years later he began using video in his reporting, and now uses a mix to create stories through the voices of his subjects and natural sound.
A long-term multimedia project from 2008 on those who provide care for the elderly, called Age of Uncertainty, won the First Place Best Documentary Prize from the POYi, the community service award from the Virginia Press Association, the 1st place convergence award from the APME and the Casey Medals the multimedia prize. The project, shot over 9 months was made up of 8 multimedia stories.
His still and multimedia work has been recognized by NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism competition, where he was the 2006 Photojournalist of the Year for markets less than 115,000 circulation, POYi, KNPA, VNPA, Atlanta Photojournalism Competition, Northern and Southern Short Courses and the Society of Newspaper Design.
He lives in Bowling Green, KY with his wife Missy Warp. The two are expecting a kid at the end of May 2010.

Updated iSBOP form available
There has been a small change in the Illinois Student Best of Photography contest form which should not effect student entires already finished. The new form can be downloaded here.
The change is in the membership/contest fees. Student IPPA membership is now $10 (originally $20). Contest entry is an additional $10 (originally free for student members). This change was made to reduce the cost for out of state students who want to attend the conference in St. Louis but are ineligible to enter the contest because they attend a school outside of Illinois and are not an Illinois native.
That is all.
