News
1st
Photographer: Fred Zwicky
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: January 16 2008
Description: Soldier’s body is returned home
Judges Comments: The emotion of this photo made this the clear winner in the category. The soldier in the background gives the photo depth and instantly communicates the context.
2nd
Photographer: Ron Johnson
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: Jan. 16, 2008
Description: 40 days of prayer service
Judges Comments: This was an image that could easily have won the category. The raised hands echoed throughout the photo really draws the reader in and communicates power of the moment.
3rd
Photographer: Matt Dayhoff
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: Jan. 11, 2008
Description: Funeral for a high school football player
Judges Comments:This was a great moment, unfortunately, the tight confines of the hallway limited the way it could be shot.
Honorable Mention
Photographer: David Zentz
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: Jan 4, 2008
Description: Fire victims
Judges Comments: This was a nice moment, well shot. We felt it didn’t quite rise to the level of the other three but it was a compelling photo that deserved recognition.
News Catagory Comments: There were not as many entries in this category as we would have expected. The top 4 entries were all the clear winners.
Feature
1st
Photographer: John Badman
Publication: The Telegraph
Date Published: Jan. 30, 2008
Description: Tug of war
Judges Comments: Tug of War often produces good photos but these kid’s faces really tell the story. We loved the fact that one of the kids is wearing a suit.
2nd
Photographer: John Badman
Publication: The Telegraph
Date Published: Jan, 8, 2008
Description: Cloudy swinging
Judges Comments: Kids in a park is a staple of standalone features. The cloudy sky and the backlit swingers makes for a striking photo.
3rd
Photographer: John Starks
Publication: Daily Herald
Date Published: Jan. 22, 2008
Description: Melting Icicles
Judges Comments: This is beautifully shot. The falling droplets are very striking.
Feature Category Comments: Not very many entries in this category and very few “found” situations. Some beautiful photos though.
Sports
1st
Photographer: Adam Gerik
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published:jan. 17, 2008
Description: Hockey head dive
Judges Comments: This was both a great action shot and a funny moment. How many times have you seen a hockey player leap over the goalie and do a header into the goal.
2nd
Photographer: John Cunningham
Publication: Freelance/ The Naperville Sun
Date Published: Jan. 27, 2008
Description: Wrestling headstand
Judges Comments: Another unusual sports photo with both wrestlers standing on their heads. Well shot and great peak action.
3rd
Photographer: Ron Johnson
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: jan. 24, 2008
Description: Basketball jubilation
Judges Comments: This was a great celebration shot that could easily have won the category if the winning action shots hadn’t been so good. The player screaming in the background is a nice touch.
Honorable Mention
Photographer: Ron Johnson
Publication: The Journal Star
Date Published: Jan. 30, 2008
Description: Falling handoff
Judges Comments: A great basketball shot that doesn’t show the basket. The player’s concentration really shows through in the photo.
Honorable Mention
Photographer: Steve Warmowski
Publication: Jacksonville Journal-Courier
Date Published: Jan. 30, 2008
Description: Trapped ball
Judges Comments: The ball trapped against this player’s face makes this a winner.
Sports Category Comments: There were a ton of entries in this category and many, many great shots.
NOTE FROM ROBIN: There are no winners for multiple feature because there were no entries in the catagory!!!! Come on you guys!
