H.E.L.L.O. Art and Talent Show Jan 28 in Chicago
Karen Kring sends an invitation:
Friends and Colleagues,
Some of you know that I’m one of the co-founders of PICTURE THIS Projects, a group of photographers, journalists and others creating and supporting projects that share the power of photography with though who have little access to the medium. Encouraging creative expression, self-esteem and bridging the gap between people of different background is the point.
Heather Eidson, Mia Aigotti, Rene Edde, Allison Williams, Josh Hawkins and Kourtney Hoffman are most active participants lately.
On behalf of the latest group of “kids” we’ve beenworking with I invite you all, as fellowphotographers, journalists and community members to an art and talent show by young homeless and formerly homeless youth.
When: Monday, January 28, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Center on Halsted
3656 N. Halsted, Chicago
Cost: FREE
The kids especially hope journalists will come to their show not necessarily to cover it, but to learn more about them and breakdown some of the stereotypes.
The show will include:
- an exhibition of photos ranging from the very personal to new takes on the city
- a tribal drum circle led by Michael Taylor, an instructor at the Old Town School of Folk music
- a tone poem written for H.E.L.L.O. by Scrap Mettle Soul based on the performers’ experiences
- readings of original poetry
The exhibitors and performers are participants in H.E.L.L.O., Homeless Experts Living Life’s Obstacles, an activism group co-sponsored by The Night Ministry and the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless at the Broadway Youth Center, and The Night Ministry’s 120-day Interim Housing Program at Open Door Youth Shelter–West Town.
Hope to see you there.
Best,
Karen Kring
