NEWS-
1st-Steve Warmowski, Jacksonville Journal Courier, Suspended Deputy-2/6/07
comments: Fantastic timing and a great way to get inside a very tense encounter. We love how the Deputy Sheriff is confronting the county sheriff who we can’t see but can only imagine his reaction. Photographer was in the right place at the right time!
2nd-John Badman, the Telegraph, Handcuffing Freeman as he attempts to flee. 2/8/07
Comments: Photographer was righ there and even got down to street level when Freeman was cuffed. You can feel him hitting the pavement.
3rd-Peter Hoffman, Aurora Beacon News, 4Teens Killed 2/12/07
Comments -Beautiful Composition- almost B&W w/spots of color. Great patience for the right people grieving. Also non-imposing. Shows a private moment.
HM-David Zentz, Peoria Journal Star ,Mourn Pekin Teenager. 2/21/07
Comments- Beautiful composition and flow of repetitive had gestures that mimic emotion of grief. We had to keep it in the winners list.
Overall comments-Overall, lots of hugs- but we liked the emotion photographers were seeking in each situation. The hard news went beyond the surface, giving a greater sense of the tension in many of the situations.
FEATURE Single-
1st-Craig Watson, Aurora Beacon News, Merry Heart Clowns Prep backstage 2/24/07
comments-WE like the dark hallway with the light at the tunnel-like middle of the frame illuminating the two clowns as they adjust their hats. It’s a touching moment, caught in the nick of time. The clown’s red hair completes the frame.
2nd-Fred Zwicky-Peoria Journal Star-Coma Teen Cries out-2/26/07
Comments-Nicely composed with the grip of the hands on the left and the mom’s face close to her son as he cries out, very, very heart-wrenching image ,makes you want to cry.
3rdScott Bort, The Courier News, Still Young at Heart 2/15/07
comments-Nice moment as the couple kiss and others look on from the right-draws your eye to the left where the story is told.
HM-Ron Johnson, Peoria Journal Star. Windmill at sunset.
Comments-Stark, striking great use of silhouette and color from the sunset.
Overall comments-Some very nice images. This category is kind of a catchall .Many great shots that any paper would love to publish on any given day, but the strongest stood out compositionally and/or in the mood they evoked or emotion displayed.
SPORTS-
1st-John Starks, Daily Herald Chargin Chargers 2/2/07
comments-Crazy Suspension, great action.
2nd David Zentz, Peoria Journal Star, Fight on Ice 2/8/07
Comment-Impact action. Photog was right there and you can feel ther pain in the face.
3rd-Steve Johnston, The Doings Swimmer reacts 2/22/07
comments-Very nice moment from a swimming event. We like the subtle reaction and the way his fingers are framed by the light on the water.
Comments-Most of the pictures were typical. The best were those that were different, something we haven’t seen before or a new way of looking at an ordinary situation.
FEATURE MULTIPLE-
1st- David Zentz, Peoria, Lure of the Ice 2/18/07
comment- Loved the way photographer handled the assignment. Wish there was color on both pages. Great variety of well-executed images.
2nd-Danielle Gardner, Sun Times News Group. 2007 Mayoral Primary 2/23/07
comment-Hard assignment for jazzy images. Loved the campaign sign image. Great sense of space, weather, feeling of rural campaign. Low budget. Super way to shoot a great variety of moments. Well edited, well designed.
3rd-Annie Christie, Lake County Journals, Living homeless 2/2-2/23/07
comments-Shot like daily assignments, but theme carried through .each situation looked different and had a different style photographically. Photographer seemed sensitive to sensitive to situations. The Images were strong. The design of the section didn’t win this, the photographers images did. The design was a little stagnant.
Category comments- Several mayor series. Best stood out. Overall some nice entries. Some entries showed multiple images but could be edited tighter. We like variety of shots.

NEWS-
1st-John Badman, Alton Telegraph, Overturned Car Carrier, 1-6-07
2nd-Fred Zwicky, Peoria Journal Star, Last Respects-1-18- 07
3rd-Fred Zwicky, Peoria Journal Star, Waiting for Bush 1-31-07
HM-Kent Kriegshauser, Register Mail,Prayer Service. 1-29-07
HM-John Badman, Alton Telegraph, Fire Reaction. 1-30-07
Comments-Strong category overall. Our first place pick may seem an odd choice given it wasn’t maybe the peak news moment, but we were impressed that the photog stuck around to get it. The overall composition caught all our eyes right away. We thought it sad that soldier funerals have become common enough that you have to find a really standout angle.
FEATURE Single-
1st-Jonathan Kirshner-State Journal Register, “I’m Too Old For this Crap” 1-07
2nd-Adam Gerik, Peoria Journal Star, Kid tripped snow feature. 1-22-07

HM-TJ Salsman - State Journal Register, Harvest-1-5- 07
HM- Jonathan Kirshner, State Journal Register Easter Service 1-5-07
Comments-Again, strong category with an immediate unanimous pick of the old man cutting trees as first place, There were some great moments as well as images with a very strong graphic design, particularly the hotel construction. Although ultimately it did not place, we give bonus points to TJ Salsman for the computer shot. How many of those do we get sent to only to come away with something as boring as it sounds.
