IPPA August Clip Contest results are in!

The results are in from our judges at the Appleton Post-Crescent from August. Here’s the rundown:

NEWS
1st Ron Johnson
Peoria Journal-Star
Fatal Accident

2nd TJ Salsman
The State Journal-Register
Man hit by train

3rd Danielle Gardner
Naperville Sun
Kid surrounded by shoes

News comments:
First place was a fast, easy read. The looks on the firemen’s faces told the story instantly. We liked the way the survivor was framed by the deputies in the second place photo. A nice moment. Nice light and framing in the third-place photo.

FEATURE SINGLE
1st Paul Valade
The Daily Herald
Kid with basketball head

2nd TJ Salsman
The State Journal-Register
Little Miss Schuyler Country

3rd Adam Gerik
Peoria Journal-Star
73 Years Together

News comments:
First was unanimous. Clean and funny. Second place was a nice moment that the photographer obviously had to work for. Third was a nice, quiet photo that shows the bond between the couple in a time of stress. HM to David Zentz, Peoria Journal-Star, nice photo of “Idol” fans waiting in line.

SPORTS
1st Whitney Curtis
The Daily Herald
Youth Golfer

2nd Steve Lundy
The Daily Herald
Tiger’s grimace

3rd Steve Lundy
The Daily Herald
Missed pass

Sports Comments:
The kid’s body language sold us on first place - up on tip toes, body arched. The expression on Tiger Woods’ face made second place an easy choice (and some of us argued for it as first) Third was a nice, clean photo of players battling for a pass.

HM to Steve Warmowski, Jacksonville Journal-Courier for his waterskier picture, tack sharp and clean

FEATURE MULTIPLE
1st Jim Bowling
The (Alton) Telegraph
Wanda’s Three Loves

2nd Steve Lundy
The Daily Herald
Extreme Fighter

3rd Shannon Kirshner
The State Journal-Register
Hard Lesson

Feature Multiple comments:
Lots of great moments in the first-place entry. We wish some of the small header photos had gotten better play. Second was a good mix of images, anchored by a strong dominant photo on each page. Third had a lot of diverse images. Photographer obviously spent a good bit of time with the subject.

HM to Ron Johnson, Peoria Journal-Star for his entry on summer shadows.

JUDGES:
Dwight Nale, Director of Photography
Kirk Wagner, Dan Powers, Sarah Beth Barnett, Mike DeSisti, staff photographers
Bonnie Lutzewitz, photo/graphics specialist

Congratulations to everyone, keep up the good work, and Happy Holidays!
