About the Speakers
Todd Heisler was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for his haunting, behind-the-scenes look at funerals for Colorado Marines who return from Iraq in caskets. He was also a member of the Rocky Mountain News staff that won a Pulitzer in 2003 for their coverage of Colorado wildfires. Before joining the staff of the Rocky Mountain News, Heisler worked at various community newspapers in suburban Chicago where he grew up.
John H. White is a staff photographer with the Chicago Sun-Times. He won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography in 1982 for a portfolio of photos detailing a year in the life of Chicago. He has photographed the city for more than 30 years and has won numerous awards throughout his career. White was the first photographer to be inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame. In addition to his work at the Sun-Times he teaches photojournalism at Columbia College Chicago.
Cyma Rubin is a producer, director, writer and president of Business of Entertainment, Inc., New York. She is the curator of the traveling exhibition, Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize photographs, currently showing at the Lake County Discovery Museum. "Busting the myths: Realities of Chicago’s Homeless Youth" A photography exhibition and forum
This month is where the rubber meets the road for PICTURE THIS Projects. PTP’s been around for 13 years, volunteers working with kids, doing photography in the name of sharing the power of photography, encouraging creative expression, self-esteem and bridging the gap between people of different backgrounds.
October 24 is about that last part: bridging the gap between people of different backgrounds.
Next week some PTP ‘kids’ who happen to be homeless, journalists and others will gather in Chicago’s south loop for a roundtable discussion about the facts behind being young and homeless. The kids will share their perspective through their pictures and words. For 2 years, PICTURE THIS Projects, led by the talented Kourtney Hoffman, has been working with kids at the Open Door Shelter. A few of their hundreds of images will be displayed as prints and a slide show at this event.
This event is organized by the Chicago Headline Club in cooperation with Columbia College Chicago, PICTURE THIS Projects, The Night Ministry, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and Columbia College’s Chicago Headline Club Student Chapter. Display of young photographers’ work is made possible by PICTURE THIS Projects and the Illinois Press Photographers Foundation.
The details:
When: Tuesday, October 24, 2006/6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Where: Columbia College’s Hokin Gallery, 623 S. Wabash Ave., 1st floor, Chicago
Free stuff: Refreshments will be served.
