Chicago photo and social/volunteer events

IPPA member and photo inspiration guru Karen Kring notifies us of two great groups working with photography enriching others lives:

The Chicago Photography Center is partnering with the Bel-Ray, a supported housing program for formerly homeless men. In recent months, a small group of men have enjoyed participating in a Photo Group. The CPC has been asked to continue this program by finding a couple of volunteers to facilitate the group. More important than photo skills will be the willingness to work with men whose lives have been more challenging than most.

PICTURE THIS is currently developing a print and web exhibition of ‘kids’ work from the Open Door Shelter project. We aim to preview it at Society for Professional Journalists convention in August. Deadlines, schmedlines. We’ll be scanning negs and making digital prints. ‘Kids’ images are quite varied; images include an elegant picture of ducks in Lincoln Park, another of an alley shot with motion blur, and others reflecting the nitty-gritty city, some graphic, some curious, some looking like good ol’ snapshots of friends and family. Don’t know what kind of help to ask for at this point, but hope to keep you informed.
