Sue Morrow
A graduate of Indiana University School of Journalism, the last 20 years has allowed me to work with some of the finest talent in journalism. My first job as a features page designer at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution led me to what I consider the turning point in my career when I joined the San Jose Mercury News as an assignments editor. Not only did I fall in love with California, through my years there I was able to be a features picture editor, assistant art director and features design director. My six years at the St. Petersburg Times as AME/Photography gave me great joy, challenging lessons and tremendous growth opportunities. In August 2005, I returned to the west coast as the deputy director of photography at the Sacramento Bee. I edit for features, edit and design projects and spend a lot of time with photographers during my day. Outside of work, Michael Rondou, my partner, and I spend time riding our Harley’s, walking our dog Roxie and catching up with old friends. Life is good.

Marine Major Steve Beck prepares for the final inspection of 2nd Lt. James J. Cathey’s body, only days after notifying Cathey’s wife of the Marine’s death in Iraq. The knock at the door begins a ritual steeped in tradition more than two centuries old; a tradition based on the same tenet: “Never leave a Marine behind.” (TODD HEISLER/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
Todd Heisler
Todd Heisler has been a staff photographer with the Rocky Mountain News in Denver since 2001. Born and raised in Mount Prospect, Heisler started his career working for community weeklies throughout the Chicago suburbs, including Pioneer Press and Sun Publications. A 1994 graduate of Illinois State University, he lives in Denver with his wife, Kelly, whom he met working at their college newspaper, The Daily Vidette. Since the start of the Iraq war, he has made three trips to Iraq, spending most of his time embedded with U.S. troops. Heisler has won numerous awards in the Pictures of the Year contest, including runner-up Photographer of the Year for 2006. He recently won a first place in the World Press Photo contest, and was a member of the photo team that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for its coverage of Colorado’s worst wildfire season.

John Badman of the Alton Telegraph named 2005 IPPA Monthly Clip Photographer of the Year
Congratulations to John Badman of the Alton Telegraph who has been named 2005 Illinois Press Photographer Association Monthly Clip Photographer of the Year.
Judges comments of John’s work included:
• “The photographer just took advantage of the special light that was present to make a really nice frame. We like the negative space on the right too, just makes her feel all alone in this mess. “We want to see the other photo the caption mentions too, that sounds great!”
Members of the St. Petersburg Times photo staff: Ken Helle, Melissa Lyttle, Daniel Wallace,Chris Zuppa and Photo editor Sherman Zent.
• “The drama of the incident was captured at several levels. The obvious flames shooting from the house are compelling, and so was the woman in the background with arms out stretched as if she pleading for the fireman to do something more to save her home.”
Members of the CNN Headline News executive staff: Rolando H. Santos, Bill Galvin, Jerry Mihoch, Tim Mallon, Herb Sierra, Dave Horslev.
• “The rest of our choices were fun pictures that made us giggle. We liked the expression and interaction between the principal and the pig.”
Members of the Memphis Commercial Appeal: John Sale, Karen Pulfer Focht, Jim Weber, Matthew Craig and Dave Darnell.

Thanks Rick for all your hard work!
This is crunch weekend for the IPPA convention–book your hotel, send your entries!
Send out your iBOP entires this weekend to get in before the deadline
Please take some time over the weekend to work on your iBOP entries in advance of the March 8 (mailed by) deadline. iBOP rules are at ippaonline.com.
http://www.ippaonline.com/download.php?view.61
Please note that when you enter the contest, you can attend the convention for free!
We’ll have a Nikon D200 for the photographer of the year. Canon will once again be letting us use their sweet printer to kick out our award certificates. We’ll also be making gallery prints for the iBOP Gallery show to be held this summer in Chicago. It’ll let the public see your great work, and we’ll have a nice little party to celebrate the results. Fame and fortune will be yours if you enter, man!!
I worked on the rules trying to simplify preparation as much as possible. You should be able to use your POYi or BOP files with category updates and other minor changes. We’re trying to make it easy for you to enter. Hey! Remember the days of slides at $1 a pop? Heck, what about all the hours in the darkroom making and mounting those prints?
And don’t forget, you can pay your IPPA dues separately, or pay the non-member fee for the contest and your dues will be taken care of for the year.
Thanks! And thanks to Matt Grotto and Joel Lerner for all their work on the contest this year. And have fun editing! All details at ippaonline.com.
