IPPA Monthly Clip Contest Winners - January 2006
Judged at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer by John Dickson, Director of Photography, Andy Rogers, Photo Editor, and Phil H. Webber, Staff Photographer.

News

First Place
Marianne Mather
The Beacon News
Marilyn Betnell Funeral
Judges Comments:Good moment and composition. Including the hearse door provided just enough context.

Second Place
Shannon Kirshner
The State Journal-Register
Girl reacts to storm damage
Judges Comments: Very good emotion - the girl’s face draws you in. Could have used more environment.

Third Place
Fred Zwicky
Journal Star
Mayor Convicted
Judges Comments: A nice picture from a boring event.

Feature-Multiple

First Place
Fred Zwicky
Journal Star
A Mother’s Love
Judges Comment: An insightful, caring look at the relationship between an 82-year-old woman and her disabled daughter. In two pages, the photographer leads the reader right into their challenging situation and shows their loving bond.

Second Place
Jonathan Kirshner
The State Journal-Register
Trial by Fire
Judges Comments: Straightforward, varied look rookie firefighters, deftly handled by the photographer who understands his subject matter.

Third Place
T.J. Salsman
The State Journal-Register
Mary Bryant Home for the Blind
Judges Comments: A photographically strong and respectful journey into life for residents at a home for the blind.

Feature-Single

(Judges’ rant warning!) There is a good-sized pile of very weak pictures entered in the Feature-Single category. Not only are these not contest pictures, they’re not good pictures at all - bad crops, bad light, non-moments, cliche subject matter - it’s all here. If you’re new to photojournalism, find an experienced mentor to give you an honest critique. If you’re entering sub-par work just for the free point, shame on you. Otherwise, if you’re just being lazy, get out there with better ideas in mind and work your subjects harder. Get help with your editing. You can do better and your readers deserve better.

That said, the winners in the category well deserve their kudos!

First Place
Jim Bowling
The Telegraph
Preacher drive by picture
Judges comments: A humorous feature photo that spans the ages (ancient preacher garb in contrast to camera phone) and ideologies. Great!

Second Place
Marianne Mather
The Beacon News
A Winter Eden
Judges Comments: There’s a place for photo gallery nature shots if really well done, and this one certainly qualifies. Good subject, color and light.

Third Place
Tom Sistak
The Times
River Reflections
Judges Comments: Nice composition and use of negative space.

Honorable Mention
Tom Sistak
The Times
Snow pants removal
Judges Comments: Not a perfect moment, but the judges applaud the documentary approach to a situation that many people can relate to - trying to wiggle out of snow pants.

Sports

First Place
Steve Warmowski
Jacksonville Journal-Courier
Basketball Flip
Judges Comment: Unique basketball pictures are hard to come by, but this one’s different and great, and good quality too.

Second Place
Dan White
Daily Herald
Blind Pin
Judges Comments: Another out of the ordinary sports picture. This wrestling shot has a touch of humor and is nicely cropped.

Third Place
Michael Schmidt
The News Sun
Diver and Flag
Judges Comments: Compositionally excellent diver shot. Makes good use of the flag that could have been a background distraction.

Honorable Mention
Brett Roseman
Daily Southtown
Double catch Carolina-Bears
Judges Comments: Just a nice, clean, peak action NFL picture that deserves a mention.

The newsletter has bios and examples of work from all of this year’s speakers/judges for the conference, April 7-8 at Northwestern University in Evanston.

Be sure to check out ippaonline.com for updates, final details and complete schedule for the conference. And if you’re coming please send your name/newspaper to -email-. Don’t forget — if you entered iBOP you can come to the conference for free! And students can come for just $10 — Northwestern students are free, as are SIU students helping out Professor James Kelly, and any other student volunteers. See the website and newsletter for fees for everyone else.

We’re going to have a great event this year, including:
• iBOP judging all day Friday
• iSBOP judging Friday afternoon
• We’ll all head out to dinner together Friday night. We’re working on a package at a Lebanese restaurant, including a belly dancer!
• Hospitality suite Friday night
• Saturday morning free brunch in the vendors’ area
• QPS on hand for free clean & checks on gear
• All sorts of food and treats thanks to sponsorship from Nikon and Canon
• Robert’s Distributors is a sponsor and will also be offering something real nice as a door prize
• Speakers starting at noon Saturday
• Introduction of the Chuck Cass Memorial Scholarship Fund
• Nikon D200s to the winners of the iBOP and iSBOP contests
• John Badman will receive a 30D for winning the Monthly Clip Contest
• Door prizes! Matt Marton has been collecting a nice bag of lukre for attendees
• We’re looking for some place for everyone to head to dinner Saturday night
• And part of the conference is a recognition for the accomplishment of photographers at Copley Chicago Newspapers in the 1990s; and following their careers since the group was sold 10 years ago. A bunch of “Copley alumni” are headed back for the conference, and it’ll be a good opportunity to catch up with everyone.
