Comments: It just pops because it’s such a strong emotional reaction from the subject.

Description: Hole in the Roof
Comments: The photographer just took advantage of the special light that was present to make a really nice frame. We like the negative space on the right too, just makes her feel all alone in this mess. “We want to see the other photo the caption mentions too, that sounds great!”

Comments: Nice sweet moment. there’s a layer that adds to it because there’s a second moment happening between the two boys back there.

Description: Confetti at Sox Parade
Comments: Different seeing going on. Good attempt at shooting through the confetti to see the faces of the crowd. “I like that a chance was taken and a different picture was made here.” It caught our eye.

Description: “We Win” - High school football jube
Comments: That’s a beautiful picture we almost didn’t see because it got used so terribly. Shame on this paper and editor for abusing such a nice moment. It feels like you are right in there celebrating with them. We can feel the energy of it all. “The photographer probably got cleat marks on his toes.”

Description: Football on the fingertips
Comments: Nice Action. We love how the football is just on the tips of his fingers, and that you don’t know if he caught it or not until you read the caption. It was timed really well, and it helps that there’s a clean background to make it just pop.

Description: Sox World Champ jube
Comments: Well framed. It’s so clean and tight, there’s nothing in there that shouldn’t be. Nice reaction. Nice to see some spontaneity and energy in professional sports.

Description: Hallway loss
Comments: Bravo! It’s absolutely killing us, this had the potential to be such a great moment. We just wish it was shot a little better.” It’s too wide and it loses the impact because the environment doesn’t add to it. But it’s such a nice moment, we should really applaud the photographer for looking for a different moment, and making an intimate picture by following the game off of the field.
Feature Single
Category as a whole — 1st, 2nd and 3rd really stood out, and the quality of work really dropped off drastically after that. There were a lot of cliche photos, and a lot of predictable photos. Overall it was a weak category, and we would have liked to have seen photographers taking a few more risks and taken a chance at seeing things differently.

Description: Be Like Abe
Comments: Very comical. Such a fun moment. Great juxtaposition between the Lincoln-look-alikes and this serious student. It kind-of looks like they’re judging him on his school work or something. “They look like a bunch of little rabbis. Wow! That’d be even funnier if they were.”

Comments: Thought it captured the personality really well of a little impish troublemaker. Goes beyond your typical cute kid in a costume feature.

Comments: There’s a nice moment happening in there but the cluttered background doesn’t help, it just takes you longer to get to that moment.

Description: Heading South
Comments: It’s always easy to say that “this was an easy picture to make” with photos like this. It’s a postcard shot. “It’s a pretty picture, but it does a lot more for me than a lot of the other photos in this category.”
Feature-Multiple
General comments: This was a disappointingly small category. So many of the entries felt like they were a haphazard collection of images loosely bound. Instead of something the photographer or newspaper thought about ahead of time, planned for and executed.

Photographer: Rick West Daily Herald
Published: 10/27/05
Description: Keeping Ryan At Home
Comments: This offers the most intimate view of all the multiple picture packages we saw. Love the pic of the mom lifting Ryan out of his chair. Beautiful moment that was both tender and story telling. The photographer had great access to the family. And the picture editors did a good job of choosing the lead photos on the inside pages. Wish the editing had been a little tighter though to reduce redundancy. And on the photographer’s part, we wish the lens selection had been a little greater to offer some visual variety. When laid out as a package, and all you have is wide angle stuff, it all starts to look similar, unless you really force yourself to use the lens in a different way.

Photographer: TJ Salsman The State Journal-Register
Date Published: 10/14/05
Description: Past Meets Progress — Welcome to Arthur, III.
Comments: Beautiful use of light. Has a lot of pretty photos in it, but it doesn’t really add up to a story. It feels more like a travelogue, than a story that reveals anything new and insightful or even personal about the people and place. “The category isn’t picture story, though, it’s feature multiple — and it fits that well.” The photographer should be applauded for making some beautiful pictures though, as should the paper for making good use of them.

Description: “Red Hot! “
Nice idea for a page to carry the red color throughout. The lead photo has a lot of energy in it, but the other pictures fall short content wise. As a feature multiple entry though, the photographer succeeded at takeing a chance on executing a different idea at a playoff game.
