Helping kids interested in photography in Chicago
Jacinda Bullie of Kuumba Lynx is working on helping an Chicago Public School located in Uptown, Uplift, put the word out that it’s looking for folks interested in setting up a photo club or afterschool photo program in their school. So I’m getting in touch with PTP‘ers and others who might know someone who could help her help this school and its students with a photo program.
According to Jacinda, Uplift is a school on probation which means lots of funding is being cut until scores improve, but the staff and school is new this year and carrying the burden of the old school’s test scores. The new staff is very interested in utilizing art to enhance academics. Kuumba Lynx is committed to seeking funding to support the school’s effort to bring photography to the school. The program they have in mind would have a photo teacher/coach come in for 25 weeks either afterschool or during the school. Funding would include paying the photo teacher/coach.
If you or someone you know are interested in finding out more, contact Jacinda at -email- or 773-550-4229.
(Thanks Karen Kring for the tip!)

Feature Single Comments:
1st Place: All the judges were struck by the photo. There is something compelling and ironic about seeing a fireman being hosed off. The clarity of the water as it bounced off him and simplicity of the composition resonated with the judges.
2nd Place: In a sea of graduates one person stands out. Is he looking back to his past or is the hint of a smile a sign of self congratulations? Everyone agreed this was not your run-of-the-mill graduation shot. The Photographer showed a good sense of creativity when the moment presented itself.
3rd Place: This transcends generations, evokes emotions and captures the realities of war in a century where women warriors must wait to see their children take their first steps because there are on the front lines defending democracy.
Honorable Mention: artistic and colorful, there is something compelling about the photo. It requires you to stop and look to solve the puzzle of what it is. Great eye for color and elements to create a memorable image.

Feature Multiple Comments:
1st Place: The layout and photo selection was interesting and easy to understand. There was nice mix of old and new equipment. The two shots of the current firefighter and the veteran firefighter underneath were compelling and interesting. The past and future came together in this part of the layout. Overall the photos did an exceptional job of supporting the theme and content of the article.
2nd Place: The composition of the photos is what set this part. The cracked streets and the shots of the people?s faces all conveyed a sense of small town in America. It could be a festival anywhere. The center shot was fun and interesting and also created a ?wow? reaction. The shot of the man with the bike on an empty street was also cited for being simple but powerful. It looks like a hot day in summer where people were impatiently waiting for the fun to begin.
3rd place: It captures the various elements of the competition and supported the article, but lacked some of the creativity of the some of the other layouts. All the shots were good and well composed, but within the realm of the expected. The exception was the last shot of the trophy being put in the car. It made us smile. We think the trophy may have been taller than the winner.

News Comments:
1St Place: This photo is compelling and fascinating. It captures the moment and human elements of a car crash and rescue efforts. At the same it is sanitary with an absence of gore that makes the photo more powerful. The sharpness of the image and the composition of the elements make this strong. In one sense every element was in place and tells a part of the story. Great Job!
2nd Place: The drama of the incident was captured at several levels. The obvious flames shooting from the house are compelling, and so was the woman in the background with arms out stretched as if she pleading for the fireman to do something more to save her home.
3rd Place: While these kinds of photos are sadly all too common, this photo stands out because the photographer captured the many emotions of a murder. The eye is drawn to the distraught woman, who conveys the raw anguish of losing a loved one. The woman to her left conveys a sense of fighting back tears in disbelief. The man conveys the senselessness of the murder and perhaps the helplessness he may feel, and the person with the hand on her face conveys shock on hearing the news. They all convey a sense of pulling together to get through the moment.
Honorable Mention: There is something simple yet powerful about the starkness of the cross in the water and the child looking sadly to one side. This conveys raw emotion and sadness. It is compelling in its simple elements.
Honorable Mention: The lighting of the scene and the lines of the stairwell come together to create a wonderful image of graduation as a rite of passage. The grads are at the bottom of the stairs in the dark about what lies before them. Their future is bright as they move up in through life. Nicely done.

Sports Comments:
1st : Stunning, emotional, and beautiful. Almost surreal. The kind of image that evokes emotions and yet has a different meaning for each person who sees it. Timeless in its feel and texture. Several judges asked if they could have a poster made of this.
2nd: This photo conveys the ferocity, drama and the physical
intensity of championship competition. The claw like hold on the ball is raw and intense, the straining tendons and muscles convey the power of the moment and flying hair conveys the energy being put into the throw.
3rd : The caption says it all. There is something about the youngster face and the ball overhead that everyone smiles.
Honorable Mention: Anticipation. This captures summer, youth, baseball and a core part of America. You can?t help but to look back at summer days, ice cold sodas and baseball.
Honorable Mention: collision at home plate. The action is powerful and speaks for itself. It captures the violence and the beauty of the collisions that takes place at home plate.

Online photo auction supporting Amnesty Int.
Stephanie Sinclair, former Chicago Trib staffer, photojournalist extraordinaire and founder of photobetty.com, there is an online print auction underway hosted by Marie Claire and Amnesty International. Check it out:
The 11 photos auctioned will raise money for Amnesty International’s Violence Against Women campaign. The Amnesty program seeks to end the violent attacks on women — particularly women who raise their voice in protest against inhumane treatment — around the world. Amnesty International has a long-running partnership with Marie Claire, and many of the photographs we have chosen for this portfolio address the issues Amnesty also works on.
These images also appeared in the September issue of Marie Claire (out now). The auction runs through the end of September.
